Movement Prayer Points

Effectiveness in prayer is often related to knowing what to ask, and asking it in alignment with God's will and language [His Word]. Movements begin and end in prayer. Prayer is the lifeblood of movements and is attributed to the explosive growth in new disciples in some of the hardest to reach places. One of these places is in West Africa where God has used Shodankeh Johnson to raise up a team of over 10,000 intercessors in West Africa and thousands more globally. From day one these disciples are trained to be intercessors. Within a 14 year span, Shadonkeh's ministry witnessed the launching of 24 Disciple Making Movements with over 11,000 new churches and over 500,000 new believers. Today, ten years after this initial multiplication, a revival of disciple makers and intercessors have baptized millions by the power of the Holy spirit. An essential aspect of their strategy is specific focused movement prayer. Below are the key points they pray for without ceasing. Remember, it takes practice and coaching to develop the skill of praying for movements. Please pray:

1. For God to send laborers into the harvest field. For an increase in disciple-makers and intercessors.

  • He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” (Luke 10:2 NIV)

  • This is Jesus’ strategy for workers, often people you don’t expect. Pray for the lost, whom God is already preparing.

2. That God touches the hearts of people and draws them to Himself.

  • “Saul also went to his home at Gibeah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched.” (1 Samuel 10:26 NIV)

  • “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.’” (John 6:43-45 NIV)

  • “On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.” (Acts 16:13-14 NIV)

3. For open doors for the Gospel to engage the lost.

  • “And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.” (Colossians 4:3-4 NIV)

  • you discover these individuals through prayer, based off of who’s open to prayer and their willingness to share with others.

4. For God to reveal persons of peace and community gatekeepers.

  • “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.” (Luke 10:5-7 NIV)

  • These are local leaders who have access to community doors. Pray their hearts will be opened and the scales of ignorance will be dropped from their eyes.

5. That every stronghold and lie of the enemy is broken.

  • “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV)

  • One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty and pull down the stronghold in which they trust. (Proverbs 21:22)

  • Pray for financial, medical, spiritual deliverance. Pray against the arguments of tradition, culture, other societies, false teachers, deception, knowledge, materialism, etc.

6. That He would grant boldness in sharing the gospel.

  • “And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word…” After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4:29,31 NLT)

  • We need courage to speak the whole council of truth; the full gospel.

7. For fresh anointing and the power of the Holy Spirit on the disciple makers.

  • “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.” (Luke 4:18 NIV)

  • “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49 NIV)

  • “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NIV)

  • “And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 13:52 NIV)

8. For an increase in signs, wonders, and miracles.

  • “Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” (Acts 4:30 NIV)

  • “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.” (Acts 2:22 NIV)

  • “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:12 NIV)

  • “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5 NIV)

9. For protection for workers in the field.

  • “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16 NIV)

  • He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. (Luke 10:18-19 NIV)

  • “Holy Father, protect them by the power of Your name, the name You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one. ...My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one.” (John 17:11b, 15)

10. For provision for the work to be done.

  • “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 NIV)

  • “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV)

  • Resources are needed, because the comission is beyond our own strength and means.

11. That there will be multiplication in the hearts of people that leads to partners and movements.

  • “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20 NIV)

  • “Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.” (Acts 6:7 NKJV)

  • Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28 NIV)

12. For other movements and disciple-makers all around the world.

  • “We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 NIV)

"people need to be coached how to pray for movements"

Prayer Rhythms in Movements

"He wakes up every morning at 3:30AM. Then he spends three hours in private prayer until his family joins him to pray at 6:30. By 7:30 he’s praying in his home office. By 8:30 he’s praying in his church office. Then at noon he stops from his work to spend twenty minutes in prayer. And finally, he finishes his workday with ten minutes of prayer. He does this every day... Shodankeh went on to tell us that every month, the first three days are dedicated to prayer and fasting. Every Wednesday is dedicated to prayer and fasting, and the church community comes together at the end of the day for two hours of prayer. Each last day of the month, the church comes together at midnight to pray over the next month. In January the entire church joins together in a twenty-one day period of focused prayer and fasting." (Paul Huyghebaert, "How Prayer Fuels Disciple Making")

A Foundation of Intercession

The journey of discipleship often begins with a simple yet profound act: prayer. In this particular movement, from day one, disciples are taught to intercede for the needs of their fellow disciples. This practice helps cultivate a sense of unity and compassion among the members, as they actively support one another in their spiritual growth.

The Discipline of Fasting: starting small to end big

The fasting regimen in this movement starts on a modest note, with disciples fasting from midnight until late evening without food or water. This practice teaches self-control and enhances spiritual awareness and confidence.

Towards the end of each year, they embark on a more intense period of fasting known as "Esther fasting," where they abstain from both food and water for three days. By the power the Holy Spirit, disciples depend on God.

A Calendar of Prayer

In this movement, prayer is not confined to personal moments of devotion. They have a structured prayer calendar that guides their communal prayer life. These aren't rules or legalism, but a culture of shared practice. Perhaps soem of these rhythms could inspire your own church's prayer calendar.

Monthly Daniel Prayer - On the first day of each month, from 5:30 to 7:30 in the morning, disciples gather to pray. This monthly ritual sets the tone for the upcoming month.

Open Heaven Prayer - At midnight on the last day of the month, disciples participate in an "Open Heaven" prayer session, seeking God's guidance and blessings for the month ahead.

All-Night Prayers - These are marathon prayer sessions that start at midnight and conclude to 6 in the morning. The entire night is dedicated to fervent prayer, allowing disciples to dive deep.

Half-Night Prayers - These sessions, which start at 8 in the evening and end late at night, offer a more manageable but still powerful opportunity for prayer and reflection.

Prayer Centers - The movement also establishes prayer centers where disciples can gather at different times during the day, from early morning to late at night, to pray together. These centers serve as hubs of spiritual energy and community connection.

Shifting from Talking to Praying Prayer

The core principle of this movement is the transition from "talking prayer" to "praying prayer." It's a shift from formality to intimacy with the divine. Instead of merely presenting plans and strategies to God, they seek to let the Holy Spirit guide their decisions and actions. They don't just talk, they listen. This emphasis on spiritual discernment and reliance on the Holy Spirit is seen as crucial for the movement's success.

In movements, prayer is not just a routine; it's a way of life. It's a journey of intercession, listening, fasting, and transformation. Only the Spirit can create a revival. All revivals begin in prayer. Are you ready to pray to see a movement of God?
